Nestled among the books, there rests a slow burn of dragons. A quick Google search will tell you that it’s either a “flight of dragons,” a “weyr of dragons,” or a “wing of dragons.” But these are library dragons. They breathe fiery rhetoric, have burning questions, and hotly debate the finer points of grammar. They singe the pages now and then; not because they would ever burn a book, but because they get a little too excited about the plot twists and turns.
They are little characters, each with its own distinctive personality, and yet…
Not one of them has a name.
Not a single one.
Well, they can’t all be Herman and Oscar, now, can they?
But lest they talk amongst themselves and start nicknaming me – and they are already skeptical of my claim to be a Bronze Dragon, so I suspect the nicknames would burn – I could use help. I’m normally better at naming creatures than this, and they certainly deserve to have names. I don’t think we can impose names on them – they’ll either fit, or not fit – but nothing’s popping into my head, not even a bad suggestion.
Look at the photo – do any of them whisper their names to you? (I’m beginning to understand the whole “Rumplestiltskin” story – perhaps they are all teasing me, refusing to tell me their names, expecting me to guess! What payment will they exact, if I fail?) While the middle dragon on the second-from-the-top shelf doesn’t exactly have a name, he has plenty of epithets, such as “Grammar Dragon” and “the Dragon of Invincibility and Plausible Excuses.”
He’s just waiting for me to come up with a plausible excuse for not giving him or his kin names.

Maybe you could find enough names for all your dragons in the books of your favorite author of dragon tales?
I can’t name any of these dragons but of course there are dragons with names. There’s Toothless, Norbert & Eragon just to get started. 🙂 I can’t remember the name of the dragon in Dragonheart, but the fact that he was a talking dragon was good enough for me. 🙂
I don’t really want to name them after famous dragons, but Toothless and Norbert are kind of “names headed in the right direction,” if you know what I mean. Whatever their names, they have to fit their personalities. It’s the #1 Rule of the Naming of Things, isn’t it?
Then what about Smokey? Most people think of that name belonging to the bear, but it was also the name of the 2-headed dragon Touche Turtle fought lol
I like that. Let me run it by them and see if any of them agree.
