Spring! 1000 Words + a Picture

Friday marks the official start of spring. What better time to restart the 1000 Words + a Picture event? They say that a picture is worth 1000 words; to a writer, those are fighting words! But to a writer with a new camera – well, surely some compromise is possible? Surely a picture plus 1000 words is even better?

I just learned about’s blogging events – so I’m going to see about making this one, in hopes of increasing interest and participation.

How It Works

For each prompt, create a blog post containing the following:

  • At least one new, original image (a photo, a sketch, a painting – so long as it is your own work and contained in an image posted on your blog);
  • A related post of 1000 words to accompany it. You may write more than 1000 words, if you want to – however, you’ll get a hat tip from me if you manage exactly 1000 words.

Tell your story, your way. What do the prompts mean – to you? There are no rules – interpret each one as you see fit, and communicate your vision. Each prompt should be covered in its own post, not a combined post covering two or more prompts. If you don’t already have a blog, it’s easy to start a free one on You are encouraged to enter every weekend – let’s say, Saturday – but you may enter whenever you like.

Alternative: Choose one or more “National Days” (see ) for the week, and use that as your theme.

At the end of May, I broke my ankle. June went by in the blink of an eye. July was busy playing catch-up and learning how to walk normally again. August is half-over, but this event is still live (in case you had any doubts!) and I hope that if there’s ever no “Theme of the Month” given, you’ll just make up your own. Now, without further excuse or ado:

August Themes: HEAT, STORMS, EYES

Bonus Themes: FAVORITE HANDMADE GIFTS – this is a twist on the annual “Ugly Christmas Sweater” thing. I want to see that handmade sweater or blanket your grandma gave you – the one you cherish because it still carries memories of her. I want to see the misshapen but beloved ashtray your six year old made you, even though you don’t smoke and have no idea where to put it. I want to see the loved gifts made, given, and received in LOVE. Don’t tell us about the ones you’d rather stuff under the bed if you didn’t fear they’d haunt your nightmares. Give us tributes to the gift-givers.

See that blue Add link button? Click it. Add a link to your post containing your original photo and 1000 words on the topic. I’ve set this to require a link back here, to mine, as well, so be sweet and include that somewhere in your post and we’ll both benefit – maybe some of our readers will discover some new blogs to enjoy!

Oooh, look – this event is now included at The Daily Post Events. How exciting to open it up to the larger community! Welcome.

Check back near the end of May for the next quarter’s themes!

So I’m really confused (WordPress newbie, sort of!) How do I get involved in this? I love the idea!!

    • Simple instructions:

      1) Write a post containing: (a) an original photo; (b) 1000 words (if they’re related to the photo, it’s a plus); (c) a link back to this blog post.

      2) Click the blue button to add your link, so everyone who comes here will see your link, too – and come visit your blog!

Let me know if that’s clear enough!

    • Also, edit your Gravatar profile to include a link to your WordPress blog so I can follow the breadcrumbs back to your place! (That link will do the same, but in general – if you comment on another WordPress blog, and someone hovers over your photo, they can open your Gravatar profile and find your other social media and blog links. Try it with mine, and you’ll see what I mean.) That’s how I found you on Twitter! 🙂
