Chris V. over at Candid Canine is blogging about Philadelphia’s “blogger tax.” Apparently, it’s not new for Philly to tax freelance writers, but they are now trying to expand this to bloggers who run ads or make a little money from their blogs. I started to leave a comment, but Blogger told me it was “too long to process.” That’s their oblique way of saying, “Get yer own blog, you long-winded one!”

Imagine if every city had their own similar requirement? What if I live in Philly but my blog is hosted in Houston and my clients are all in the UK and pay me via PayPal? They confused alcohol with some sort of cleaning solution they found under the bar, spiced it up with a shot of rum and colored it with a splash of grenadine. The doctor took one look at it, shuddered mightily, and fell over dead; the lawyer threatened to sue himself and died after drinking a self-congratulatory shot of the noxious concoction; and the writer stole the doctor’s prescription pad and the lawyer’s gold Cross pen with which to write a bestselling tale of mysterious death and finger-pointing.

In all seriousness, it’s about the pros and cons of hubris, self-editing, under-valuing our own skills, and joining the 21st century – not necessarily in that order.

Be sure to leave a comment – I’m sure you have your own thoughts on this, whatever your profession.
