Estimated reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

Low_Res_front_cover_Guppies-199x314A Puppy, Not a Guppy can now be pre-ordered directly from 4RV Publishing! Inspired by the true story of my daughter?s unfulfilled dreams of owning a dog, A Puppy, Not a Guppy tells the story of a little girl who desperately wants a puppy she can take on walks and teach to play fetch, but her parents say ?no way!? They reluctantly allow her to rescue a few ?boring? little fish, instead. Irma just can?t hide her disappointment, but along the way, she learns something about the importance of perception and persistence. Those ?boring? little guppies might just teach Irma a thing or two!

I don’t spend as much time at the computer since I’ve been ill, and so I miss catching your blog posts.

Yea for A Puppy, Not a Guppy. I hope everyone really likes it. I’ll be blogging about it as soon as I can approve the proof tomorrow or the next day. Think I’ll also make a trailer.

Oh, what’s the next book, Holly?

@Vivian Zabel, you know I never talk about a work in progress!

      • Reply » Vivian Zabel November 4, 2009

@Holly Jahangiri, But, but, shouldn’t I have a hint at least? Or maybe you’re not happy with your current publisher? Nah, you’d let me know if that were true. I would be the first to know after you.

        A hint? Genre? Something?

@Vivian Zabel, I’m very happy with my current publisher! ::hands Vivian a fishing rod and some bait:: And you know me so well – you WOULD be the first to know, after me, if I weren’t!

No, I just don’t talk about works in progress – and it IS in progress.

a guppy for a puppy?! sounds interesting!

frustrations… disappointments… realizations… I bet kids can learn a lot about this book

…and of course, adults too ;)

    Congratulations Holly!

@Roy, that’s probably true. :) Of course it’s true. But fun was foremost in my mind; if learning happens along with the fun, well, who’d complain? I try not to beat people over the head with morals, messages, and lessons, but they’re in there – just like veggies are in zucchini bread, but it tastes like cake!

Holly, you’re a rock star! I can’t wait to buy this for Joe & Lilypooh. Hope it doesn’t give them any ideas about getting a puppy though, heh.

Pre-ordered a copy for my daughter, it’s not for me :)

Much easier this time than going to B&N and trying to order Trockle–hope it’s as good!

So that’s what you meant by guppy. LOL. Tickles me imagining that little girl taking her bowl of guppies for a walk as she would a dog. What a productive year for you, Holly. A new book and a novel in progress!

@jan geronimo, Irma would be distressed that you are tickled by her misfortune! :) It’s a thought, though – you know, she could put the bowl on a wagon and pull it with a rope. It’s a wonder no one suggested THAT to her!

        @Holly Jahangiri,

Doesn’t work Holly, my daughter tried that several years ago–the guppies get jiggled to death. I got crafty and found her a rescued Border Collie in Minnesota for free. The cost after falling in love with the mutt was $1100 for the plane ticket to Florida during Christmas, $400 for the new fence and $78 for the vet check up when he got here. She’s still breeding guppies but treating them responsibly now. Can’t wait for the book.

I hate pre-orders, some p-shrink must have invented that whole delayed gratification thing to explain my frustration and create billable hours:)

        • Reply » Holly Jahangiri November 7, 2009

@Dave, hahaha, some “free” dog! I hope the mutt’s returned her affections. I’m glad Irma didn’t have to learn such a tough lesson with HER guppies (none of them die in the book, I can reveal that much!) She does learn a few very interesting things about these little fish, but no harsh lessons and no tragic endings.

Congrats Holly. I love puppies and I have two of them (well not puppies anymore, hehe). BTW, is your book going to be available in digital format?

@DiTesco, I don’t know, but there are no plans for a digital edition at this point.

You like BIG puppies! (I’m not surprised they get along, either – smartest breed, dumbest breed. Bet I know the pecking order around your pack!)

congrats, holly! I’ve always wanted to write stories for children.

i’m sure your book readers will learn a lot from it. This I always remember: “What we asked but not given to us when we were still children, will always be remembered even in our adult years. The replacement, even if of greater value, will not suffice.”

Thank you, @Novz. That is such a true statement. Then again, I can live without that pony I wanted when I was twelve. I think Irma will survive…she’s a resourceful kid, and the guppies, well, they’re not as dumb as they look.

Out of curiosity, if you have always wanted to write stories for children, have you tried? What’s standing in your way?
