How to Sort Text in Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer
by Holly Jahangiri on Mar 10th, 2010
Microsoft Word Select the Insert tab. Click Table > Convert Text to Table. In most cases, if you’re simply sorting a list of items, the default options in the Convert Text to Table dialog are adequate. Check them, change them if you wish, then click OK. Select the newly created table and then click Sort. For a simple list in a one-column table with multiple rows, the default values (shown below) should be fine. If you want Wo...Read More » Tags

Monday News & Views
by Holly Jahangiri on Feb 15th, 2010
It’s Monday, and I am grateful to my employer for recognizing the need for a post-Valentine’s Day recuperative holiday…oh, wait… Happy Presidents’ Day! Anyone reading this old enough to remember when we celebrated Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays – on their birthdays – and they weren’t co-opted by the other 42 and used as an excuse for a postal holiday? Not that I’m really complaining, mind you. Other Presidents, too, ...Read More » Tags

Fixing Autocomplete
by Holly Jahangiri on Jan 29th, 2010
Not that I ever make typos. We all know my spelling and punctuation are perfect; I type 20 words a minute with 99.3% accuracy, arguably making me the world's fastest typist. But let's say...let's say the dog jumped up and bit me in the elbow, making me type http://www.goggle.co instead of http://www.google.com/. And being in extreme pain, I hit the Enter key as hard as I can while yelling for someone to drive me to the @#$% ER. I come back,...Read More » Tags

by Holly Jahangiri on Jan 27th, 2010
“Why am I not on your Top 8?” I don’t rank my friends offline, so why should I start now – on the Web? Ranking family and friends is just asking for trouble and drama I can live without. My mother used to laugh at the wedding announcements in the Society pages of the local paper: “…and afterwards, there will be a small reception for three hundred of the couple’s closest friends.” Who has three hundred friends, let alone close fri...Read More » Tags

Experiment & Results: Improving Alexa Rank
by Holly Jahangiri on Jan 24th, 2010
Why I Care Why do I care about my site’s Alexa ranking? I’m sure there are legitimate reasons to care, but mine just keep going back to that weird and useless combination of competitiveness and curiosity. Frankly, Alexa hadn’t even made it onto my radar until other bloggers brought it to my attention. I took a peek – my site was down around 3,890,577. I didn’t know much, but I knew that was pretty dismal. (more...)...Read More » Tags

WHOSE Money are You Making Online?
by Holly Jahangiri on Jan 24th, 2010
I see so many discussions focused on monetizing and optimizing your blog, and sometimes I wonder if most bloggers aren’t just building a house of cards, setting themselves up for disappointment, because when all is said and done, they have no idea why they’ve jumped through all these hoops and still don’t have ten cents’ profit to show for all the effort. They’ve paid hundreds of dollars for books and courses and spent countless hours r...Read More » Tags
