Why Give to Project Why? #ProjectWhyDelhi #GivingTuesday

Nov 26, 2018 | No-Niche Posts

I am pleased and honored to help spread the word about Project Why, and specifically, the Project Why Women’s Centre at Madanpur Khadar, New Delhi (#ProjectWhyDelhi) A number of us bloggers learned about Project Why just a couple of years ago, through our friend Damyanti Biswas (@damyantiwrites). And now, we are helping raise much needed funds for its vital community programs this #GivingTuesday.

Empower Women, Lift Up Whole Communities

Project Why provides after-school support to underprivileged children, and also works to empower women, so that they can support themselves and their children. Since 2007, over 1000 women have been trained at the women’s centre sewing circle, including Renu, the sewing teacher.

Six years ago, when she joined Project Why, Renu Karotia had lost her home and incurred huge debts. Her husband got retrenched after an incapacitating work accident. After joining the Project Why sewing class, Renu started taking small jobs at home. She then grew into the role of the sewing teacher and began taking pride in her students’ newfound skills.

She is now paying back her debts and knows that she holds the key to her future in her hands. Her children study at the after-school support classes run by Project Why.

Today Renu is looking at developing the skills of her students through a six-month program. This will enable them to find employment in the garment industry. To this end, Project Why urgently needs the following:

Iron 1000/-
Interlocking machine 4400/-
Pico machine 5600/-
Ironing board 2000/-
Cutting table 4000/-
6-month salary for Renu 60,000/-

Total amount needed: 77,000/-  (About $1100 in USD – every donation, big or small, goes a long way, here!)

Why Donate?

Help Renu, a Sewing Teacher, Empower a Women's Sewing Circle

Women are true agents of change and helping them find the means to earn a livelihood goes a long way in transforming the lives of their families. At Project Why, Renu and her students not only practice sewing but also learn to read and write. When women are empowered, domestic violence drops, and subsequent generations find access to better education and ever-greater opportunites.

Join the Project Why family by supporting Renu, so she can help women like herself. No amount is too small, and every little bit would help make Renu’s dreams become a reality!

When we educate and empower one woman, we set off a chain reaction that transforms the life of her family and the community she lives in.

Renu sounds like someone I’d love to get to know, judging by the things Damyanti has said about her. At least I can do something to help her establish her class and train other women in skills that will help them to improve their situations! Paying it forward is always a good thing!

It will make such a difference. I don’t know what I’d have done without education and skills training and meaningful work. I love my husband dearly, but I’m so thankful I’m able to contribute and, if necessary, take care of myself. I hope that also sets a good example for my children and, one day, grandchildren. We can’t really have it all, all the time, but we can always do a bit better and with more self-reliance.

I would love to, but it’s probably not likely in the next couple of years. Still, I hope that you will give them all my regards – you really started something great, there, Anouradha, and it seems you have a dedicated team to help you carry on the work.

Project WHY is a great initiative to empower women. Thanks for sharing about it and Renu’s story. Renu has not only braved tough circumstances to earn a living, but is also empowering others to do the same. More power to her and Project WHY.

Paying it forward is such an important thing. Renu is clearly a tough-minded and resilient woman, but now she’s helping lift up others as well as herself, and that is a blessing that will keep on giving.
