{"id":1011369,"date":"2023-04-26T18:07:34","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T23:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jahangiri.us\/2020\/?p=1011369&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=1011369"},"modified":"2025-03-03T12:29:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T18:29:19","slug":"villanelle-the-reaping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jahangiri.us\/2020\/villanelle-the-reaping\/","title":{"rendered":"Villanelle: The Reaping"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Reaping<\/h2>\n<p>As Spring gives way to Summer&#8217;s radiant glow<br \/>\nThat warms the world in melting heat<br \/>\nWe lose our sense of Winter&#8217;s coming snow.<\/p>\n<p>Spring&#8217;s fledglings, fawns, and kits all grow<br \/>\nThe calf gives up its mother&#8217;s teat<br \/>\nAs Spring gives way to Summer&#8217;s radiant glow<\/p>\n<p>Content with grassy fields, the cattle graze and low<br \/>\nNewly shorn, sheep softly bleat<br \/>\nWe lose our sense of Winter&#8217;s coming snow.<\/p>\n<p>At Winter&#8217;s end, we bid the darkness &#8220;Go!&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd soon, its icy chill retreats<br \/>\nAs Spring gives way to Summer&#8217;s radiant glow<\/p>\n<p>At last, all Fall to the conquering foe &#8211;<br \/>\nIn stunning self-deceit<br \/>\nWe lose our sense of Winter&#8217;s coming snow.<\/p>\n<p>Smiling, we pretend we do not know<br \/>\nWhat end must come, when life&#8217;s complete.<br \/>\nAs Spring gives way to Summer&#8217;s radiant glow<br \/>\nWe lose our sense of Winter&#8217;s coming snow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u2014 Holly Jahangiri<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Today&#8217;s Poet<\/h2>\n<p>Paul Verlaine &#8211; a French poet of the 19th century whose poem, Chanson d&#8217;automne, was used in WW II.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In preparation for\u00a0<a title=\"Operation Overlord\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Overlord\">Operation Overlord<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"BBC\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BBC\">BBC<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a title=\"Radio Londres\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radio_Londres\">Radio Londres<\/a>\u00a0had signaled to the\u00a0<a title=\"French Resistance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Resistance\">French Resistance<\/a>\u00a0with the opening lines of the 1866 Verlaine poem &#8220;Chanson d&#8217;Automne&#8221; were to indicate the start of D-Day operations under the command of the\u00a0<a title=\"Special Operations Executive\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special_Operations_Executive\">Special Operations Executive<\/a>. The first three lines of the poem, &#8220;Les sanglots longs \/ des violons \/ de l&#8217;automne&#8221; (&#8220;Long sobs of autumn violins&#8221;), would mean that Operation Overlord was to start within two weeks. These lines were broadcast on 1 June 1944. The next set of lines, &#8220;Blessent mon coeur \/ d&#8217;une langueur \/ monotone&#8221; (&#8220;wound my heart with a monotonous languor&#8221;), meant that it would start within 48 hours and that the resistance should begin sabotage operations, especially on the French railroad system; these lines were broadcast on 5 June at 23:15.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanson_d%27automne#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanson_d%27automne#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanson_d%27automne#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-etoiles_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanson_d%27automne#cite_note-etoiles-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanson_d%27automne\">Chanson d&#8217;automne &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It is time for the letter &#8220;V&#8221; &#8211; and I would be remiss if I failed to mention the villainous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.litcharts.com\/literary-devices-and-terms\/villanelle#Villanelle%20Examples\" rel=\"\">Villanelle<\/a>. Do note that it was a <em>mistake<\/em> to think it a fixed form; originally, villanelle merely meant a country dance. It might as well have been the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paradelle\" rel=\"\">Paradelle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>April is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Poetry_Month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Poetry Month<\/a>. This year marks its 27th year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.napowrimo.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NaPoWriMo<\/a> &#8211; 30 days of writing poems &#8211; is poets&#8217; answer to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).<\/p>\n<p>This coincides with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.a-to-zchallenge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A to Z Blogging Challenge<\/a>, now celebrating its 13th anniversary. Some participants choose a theme; others wing it. Doesn&#8217;t matter! The real challenge is to build a practice of writing daily. I think I stuck with it&#8230;once.\u00a0You can see the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1bzdvBGdiKmil7Rqa6U39wMkg8O3_zlb6uIvV_64grks\/edit#gid=242088303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of participants<\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;d love it if you&#8217;d visit and comment on their blogs.<\/p>\n<p>This month, my goal is to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Write a poem a day and share it &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/poetrytalk.substack.com\/p\/a-dark-drawer-full-of-virgin-writing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncurated<\/a> &#8211; here; and<\/li>\n<li>Highlight some poets you may be unfamiliar with.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I encourage you to click the links to read about them and their work. I plan to choose a diverse array of classical and contemporary poets &#8211; indigenous poets, Black poets, women poets, LGBTQ poets &#8211; that challenge us to see the world differently while also tapping into universal themes and emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, too, that comments and conversation are always welcome here.
