What would they tell us, if they could offer advice after death? Why do we view death, or ghosts, as &#8220;scary&#8221;? Wouldn&#8217;t our ancestors wish us well, assuming they did so during life? And even if they didn&#8217;t, surely now they would be free to pursue other interests rather than sticking around to make our lives miserable.<\/p>\n<h3>Encomium to the Living<\/h3>\n<pre class=\"subtitle\"><em>After RG Evans<\/em><\/pre>\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<pre class=\"poem\">From six feet under, we salute you, you\r\nwho tread the ground above, toes wet with dew\r\nbehind a mausoleum, there to steal\r\na kiss. Such \u201ccrimes\u201d we happily conceal.\r\n\u200b\r\nPerhaps you sense us stirring underfoot \u2013\r\ndon\u2019t be afraid. It is our joy to put\r\naside despairing sighs of death to hear\r\nyour sighs of pleasure, life, and love so near.\r\n\u200b\r\nNow rest against our gray and lichened stones\r\nwrapped tight in one another\u2019s muscled bones.\r\nRegale us with adventures that you\u2019ve planned\r\nto sing us back to sleep, here in the sand.\r\n\u200b\r\nRemember us, now tucked within a shroud\u2014\r\nwe long to hear you live your lives out loud.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What would the dead write of us, if they could still pen a poem?
