The following poem is a Dorsimbra, inspired by our recent drive from Omaha, Nebraska, to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and back to Des Moines, Iowa and by Grant Wood’s famous painting, “Young Corn.” Iowa, by the way, was the 50th state my husband and I visited. <\/p>\n

Heralding the Feast<\/h2>\n
So gently sloped, the glacial drift, now green\r\nand yellow, charred, and plowed, awaiting spring\r\nwhen hungry migratory deer are keen\r\nto taste the offerings the farmer brings.\r\n\r\nThey follow red-winged blackbirds,\r\nsoaring high in search of borers, aphids,\r\nrootworms, corn sap beetles\u2014\r\nheralding the feast.\r\n\r\nEternal is the battle, push-and-pull\r\nof rocks and soil, animal and man.\r\nOur history's but a scratch etched on the Earth;\r\nso gently sloped, the glacial drift, now green.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
