{"id":137990439,"date":"2025-05-20T13:59:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T18:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jahangiri.us\/2020\/?p=137990439"},"modified":"2025-12-04T08:50:40","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T14:50:40","slug":"new-poetry-form-the-scala-decima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jahangiri.us\/2020\/new-poetry-form-the-scala-decima\/","title":{"rendered":"New Poetry Form: The Scala Decima"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Scala Decima<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Scala Decima<\/strong> poetry form was invented by Holly Jahangiri, who serves on the Boards of both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetsnw.com\/\">Poets Northwest<\/a> (in Houston, TX) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/poetrysocietyoftexas.org\/\">Poetry Society of Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The rules are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10 lines;<\/li>\n<li>10 syllables per line (iambic pentameter if you can manage it);<\/li>\n<li>rhyme on syllable that corresponds to the line numer (i.e., first syllable sets the rhyme; second syllable of second line, third syllable of third line, fourth syllable of fourth line, and so on continue it);<\/li>\n<li>the rhyming syllable can occur anywhere within a word and need not be the whole word.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Singing Brook<\/h2>\n<p><em>An example of the Scala Decima poetry form.<\/em><\/p>\n<pre class=\"poem\"><strong>Grown<\/strong>\u2014like a child that\u2019s free to play, to roam\r\nthis <strong>stone<\/strong>-lined rivulet that gaily\r\nruns from <strong>known<\/strong> familiar sun-warmed waters.\r\nOld bone on <strong>bone<\/strong> remembers, lifts its voice\u2014\r\nSoft old bari<strong>tone<\/strong>, sings songs of distant\r\nsummer\u2019s youth; tries to <strong>own<\/strong> its fleeting joy\r\nonce again, but knows it\u2019s <strong>flown<\/strong> too far now\u2014\r\na bird that seeks the seed it\u2019s <strong>sown<\/strong>, to rest\r\namong the leaves and feathers, wind<strong>blown<\/strong> yet\r\nin seeking home, it will not die a<strong>lone<\/strong>.\r\n<\/pre>\n<h2>Your Turn!<\/h2>\n<p>Try your hand at writing a poem in the Scala Decima form.
