We all know, by now, that today is Day 24 &#8211; but also &#8220;V&#8221; &#8211; and Day 23&#8217;s prompts had me stubbornly dragging my feet. Write a villanelle? Grrr. You first. Fine. Fine. And lots of other F-words. You can read my feelings about the form, and my earlier attempts at it, in <a title=\"Villanelle the Vote!\" href=\"https:\/\/jahangiri.us\/2020\/1009535-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Villanelle the Vote!<\/a> If you are unfamiliar with the &#8220;rules&#8221; of the villanelle, Vince helpfully posted the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Maureen Thorson\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.napowrimo.net\/day-twenty-three-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NaPoWriMo<\/a>\u00a0prompt: \u201cTry your hand today at your own take on a villanelle, and have the poem end on a question.\u201d Here&#8217;s a great page on the villanelle:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/glossary\/villanelle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/poets.org\/glossary\/villanelle<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Robert Lee Brewer\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writersdigest.com\/2026-april-pad-challenge-day-23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poem-a-Day<\/a> suggestion: \u201cFor today&#8217;s prompt, write a juxtaposition poem.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Villainous Villanelle II<\/h2>\n<pre class=\"poem\">Some forms of rhyme and meter I would ban - \r\nthe evil villanelle, of course, is one.\r\nI only write one now to prove I can.\r\n\r\nRepeating lines and rhymes - can I enjamb\r\nthis one to fit, around the line to run?\r\nThe villanelle? I never was a fan.\r\n\r\nI fantasize: Were I a laureled man,\r\nI'd take this form and yeet it to the sun.\r\nI only write one now to prove I can.\r\n\r\nThe critic reads this thing and says, \"Madame,\r\nTo end its misery would take a gun.\"\r\nThe villanelle? I never was a fan.\r\n\r\nI think of running, going on the lam \u2014\r\nI'd give it up, and yet it isn't done.\r\nI only write one now to prove I can.\r\n\r\nI toss my pen across the room, yell, \"BAM!\"\r\nI'm finished now. This wasn't fun.\r\nThe villanelle?
